Special guests highlight Orchestra Camp
Orchestra students from BCMS and BHS gathered for the third annual Summer Orchestra Camp at Buffalo High School from July 8-12. Throughout the week students rehearsed in both large and small groups, and BCMS students worked with high school mentors.
Students also had the opportunity to learn from and interact with a number of professional musicians. Eric Graf, a freelance cellist, performed samples of classical, folk, jazz and pop music.
In addition, “The OK Factor,” a new-classical crossover duo, joined the students for a three-day residency. Cellist Olivia Diercks and violinist Karla Colahan of Minneapolis shared their passion for composing, performing, and teaching, creating a unique atmosphere of fun and learning. One focus of their instruction was introducing orchestra students to the many different skills that go into being creative and confident when improvising. Students also enjoyed a special performance by “The OK Factor” each day.
BHS orchestra director Kristine Wiese organized and facilitated the camp.
“This camp is a wonderful opportunity for string students from BHM Schools and surrounding areas to continue playing their instruments and developing their skills outside of the work we do each school year,” said Wiese.
With the flexible, week-long camp schedule, Wiese intentionally designs special opportunities to motivate the students in unique ways and expose them to truly special opportunities.
“I believe the guest musicians, mentorship opportunities and the residency of ‘The OK Factor’ at camp this year did just that!” said Wiese.
