Description: The Tatanka is the nationally-renowned yearbook of Buffalo High School. Students from all grades are welcome to participate by writing stories, taking photos, doing graphic design, or editing content. Content is produced mostly by the Publications Writing Class, which is available to juniors and seniors. However, freshmen and sophomores are needed all year long.

Description: BHS Singers is a highly selective mixed SATB ensemble comprised of 11th and 12th grade singers. This ensemble sings a wider range of music from classic choral literature and modern pop to vocal jazz. Auditions are held each year in the spring to build the roster for the following school year. Rehearsals are Mondays from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm in the Choir Room. BHS Singers enjoys an active performance schedule at BHS and in the community. All members of this ensemble must also be enrolled in Concert Choir.

Description: Jazz I is an extracurricular ensemble that meets two mornings per week before school. This is an auditioned group. Auditions are held in the spring. It is open to Juniors and Seniors. It is common for this group to include musicians who have learned second or third instruments in Jazz II and III. There are often non-band students playing guitar, piano or bass. This group performs at a wide variety of concerts, festivals and contest throughout the year.

In addition, there are many upper classman who also join Jazz III. No audition is required, and it is a great place to learn to play a second or third instrument. There are often non-band students playing guitar, piano or bass. This groups plays at three concerts throughout the year as well as the Region 2AA Jazz Contest.

Description: Participation in the Music Listening Contest is open to students 9-12 with an interest in learning more about a wide range styles of classical music. Students are provided access to an online listening list as well as being provided with an approximately 75-page study guide. Students participate in the contest in teams of three which can be of the students' or the adviser's choosing. Most work is done on student's own time but we get together for study sessions once a week from late November through mid January. The region contest takes place on the 3rd Friday in January and the state contest on the first Friday in February.

Description: Summer Marching Band is an extra-curricular activity beginning in May and continuing through the end of June. The band competes at parades throughout the State of Minnesota and travels nationally in even number years. All band students in grades 8-12 are eligible to participate and non-band students are welcome to join the Color Guard and Honor Guard. There are no auditions for membership.

Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 3:30 pm - 5 pm in the Choir Room. Treble Singers has an active performance schedule at BHS and in the community. All members of this ensemble must also be enrolled in Varsity Choir or Concert Choir.

Description: Multi-Act Play: Our non-musical play is typically a two to three act performance offered in the spring or fall, opposite the musical. Students interested in acting should prepare for auditions which include improvisation, cold readings, and or prepared monologues. Rehearsals are scheduled after school Tuesday through Friday from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Some evening rehearsals are scheduled throughout the season. Students are also encouraged to participate in Technical Crew. Here they can learn the skills of lighting, set building, costuming, make-up, sound and more.

Description: The One-Act play (our most varsity level production) is a competitive MSHSL activity. No more than 20 students are allowed to be involved (per MSHSL rules). Auditions (including student technicians) are held in early December and rehearsals (after school Tuesday - Friday from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm and some evenings) run into February. We participate in potentially four contests (all held on Saturdays), depending on our success rate. The BHS One-Act play has gone to the State Festival 14 times in the last 27 years receiving the highest rating seven times.

Description: Our musical alternate between the spring or fall, opposite the play. Auditions will include reading from the script, singing (a portion of a song you select and prepare) and dance (come dressed to move). They also may include additional audition methods such as improvisation. Rehearsals take place after school (Tuesday- Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.), and will include some evenings and Saturdays. It is normally a two month rehearsal period. We have a large group of student technicians who fill multiple leadership roles and learn the skills of lighting, set building, costuming, make-up, sound and more. We participate in the Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight Education Musical Theatre Program through which many of our students have received individual awards as well as our musical winning their highest honor multiple times.
